Attacker obtains code execution in the Network VM partially mitigated
THREATQW17
· Partially mitigated: Some controls are in place, but the risk is still too high.
· Defined in catalog.py:3258
- Risk
- Low impact × Low likelihood = 2 low
- After mitigations
- Low impact × Medium likelihood = 3 low
An attacker exploits a network-level vulnerability and can intercept, store, and modify all traffic to and from the SecureDrop Workstation
Threat actors: Nation State / Law Enforcement Large Corporation
Mitigations
No mitigations in place.
Possible further mitigations
- grsecurity in all Debian templates MITIGQW3 implemented
Where it applies
Applies to 1 component in 1 scenario.
Workstation: reading submissions · sys-net
Notes
In scope for audit: No. Existing mitigations: All SecureDrop-related traffic goes through Tor, updates to templates and dom0 are done via GPG-signed packages served by dnf repos served over HTTPS. Metadata expires after 7 days to reduce the possibility of replaying stale/vulnerable packages. Further mitigations: Further harden the Network VM, use a physical hardware firewall, grsec (MITIGQW3).
